After almost three years, the “romantic getaway” that TV legend Dick Clark and his wife built on a hilltop in Malibu, California — the house that so many people have likened to the architecture of “The Flintstones” — has finally sold.

It went for an appropriately eccentric $1,777,777,reported our friends at Trulia.

Clark and his wife, Kari, were married at 7 p.m. on July 7, 1977 (7/7/77), in a ceremony that supposedly lasted 17 minutes and had seven guests. And he is said to have had a post office box numbered 7777.

The house sold for just a hair over half the initial asking price of $3.5 million.

Yahoo Homes spoke to the listing agent, Diane Carter of Coldwell Banker, earlier this year, when the price was cut to $3 million. She said the Clarks built it in 1988 as a “romantic getaway.” The couple listed it in March 2012, not long before the TV host died at age 82.

Symmetry Can Rescue Your Room | Armonk Real Estate

Human faces, snowflakes, violins, the Eiffel Tower — so much of our world is symmetrical, it’s no wonder the eye is drawn to things with a mirror-image quality, including interiors. No matter your decor style, embracing symmetry can help your space look its best. Whether you’re bringing grandeur to a small space or doing more with your art collection, here are 10 reasons to work symmetry into your rooms.

10 Advantages of the Humble Ranch House | Armonk Homes

Since falling from favor in the 1970s, the ranch house has languished on the bottom rung of the architectural food chain. Critics deride its small size, dated finishes and prosaic design. But if you’re able to see past such shortcomings, the ranch (or rambler, as it’s sometimes known) has a lot to offer potential home buyers — particularly those on a budget.

Popularized in the 1950s by architectural designer and developer Cliff May, the ranch celebrated the postwar profusion of cheap land and sprawling suburbs, with a horizontal footprint that turned its back on the streetscape to focus on backyard living.

While May’s original designs showed great finesse, the ranch was copied so often — and so poorly — that eventually the style became associated with cheap tract-house living. Which is a shame, because ranch houses can be an affordable, efficient option that’s compatible with today’s lifestyles and needs.Below you’ll find some of their advantages, along with ideas for working with ranch homes.

U.S. existing home sales hit one-year high in October | Armonk Real Estate

U.S. home resales jumped to their highest level in more than a year in October and outpaced the sales level a year ago for the first time in 2014, further evidence the housing market is on a recovery path.

The National Association of Realtors (NAR) on Thursday said existing home sales rose 1.5 percent to an annual rate of 5.26 million units, the highest rate since September of last year. Sales rose 2.5 percent compared to a year ago, the first time since October 2013 that nesales have risen above the prior-year levels.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast sales falling to a 5.16 million-unit pace, from an upwardly revised rate of 5.18 million units in September.

“This is the first time in the year where we have seen a year over year annual gain, which means that existing home sales have made that successful U-turn,” Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist, told reporters.

Housing is slowly regaining its footing after activity stalled in the second half of 2013 following a run-up in mortgage rates. While the sector continues to be hobbled by sluggish wage growth, a recent decline in mortgage rates should help support sales.

A separate report this week from the Mortgage Bankers Association showed applications for loans to purchase homes surged last week as low rates lured potential buyers.

The Coolest, Airiest New Tiny House Hails From South Africa | Armonk Real Estate

pod.jpgPhoto courtesy of Pod-Indawo

Motivated by the challenge of sustainable urban living, which has already propelled countless tiny homes and prefab housing efforts around the world, Johannesburg-based architect Clara da Cruz Almeida set out to design a micro home especially well-suited for South Africa. The result, unveiled last week at a local design fair, is Pod-Indawo, a modular prefab dwelling that promises to shave some money off the energy bill without sacrificing comfortable design.

A look inside, this way. >>

Basic pod units measure 183 square feet each, but can also combine in various configurations to form larger, multi-use living areas. As seen in these photos, the Pod looks quite spacious and airy. This is a product of the structure’s steep height (which also maximizes solar-energy capture on the roof), and of course, the work of interior and product design firm Dokter and Misses, who collaborated with Almeida on the project. The designers chose a light and calming palette of white, mint green, and grey, and in order to create more space and avoid clutter, prioritized features like a fold-down table, fold-away couches, and enclosed storage. Furnishings aside, the Pod also tries to engage with the outdoors, as exemplified by the shaded “backyard deck” and the ventilating circular opening near the lofted bed.

Local Representation for North Castle Neighborhoods

On the Road to Non-Partisan Elections

Neighborhood Representation on the North Castle Town Board will  reduce partisan control of Town Government.

A special election considering Neighborhood

Representation on the Town Board will be held on

Thursday, November 13, 2014.

Vote Yes on Both Propositions

“There is no Republican / Democrat way to plow snow.”  Yet, the major Town political parties, the gatekeepers of Town politics,  have managed to concentrate power in a tight political establishment for decades. Outsiders are not welcome.

Town wide Elections make it almost impossible for non-partisan candidates to run.  Parties control:

  • Endorsements
  • Petitions
  • Funding
  • Ballot lines
  • And More….

The Ward System can enable non-partisan candidates.

  • Barriers for candidates to run will be dramatically reduced.
  • Neighborhood elections are scaled where candidates do not need Party support.
  • Small election districts will allow non-partisan candidates to effectively compete.

Non-Partisan candidates can reduce the concentration of power and provide for more equal representation.

More Councilpersons will also make the Board more transparent, as it would be harder for the establishment to tightly control the Board.

The Democrat and Republican Party Committees bitterly oppose the Ward System because they have the MOST TO LOSE.

  • The Ward System proposal has brought the  Town’s political parties together.  United for North Castle (UNC), is a PAC made up of the major Town Party committees.
  • They have joined together in an e-mail and sign campaign opposing the ward system and defending the Armonk centric political establishment.
  • It is a shame that rather than discuss the pro’s and con’s of the ward system, UNC has chosen to attack the  North Castle citizen petitioners with innuendo and personal attacks;
  • It is a shame the party leaderships resort ugly political tactics, falsely trying to link the petitioners to some unnamed evil forces, rather than discuss propositions on their merits;
  • It is deceitful, knowing full well that the Board of Elections will assure wards with equal populations, to  publish misleading data on hypothetical ward maps implying unequal wards and then, somehow, try to conflate the ward system with the Brynwood controversy;
  • It is puzzling that the people who call for “civility” in Town politics, in the next breath, put out a cynical town wide letters which imply unnamed sinister connections and make divisive attacks.

Who is behind the Ward System proposals?
Tony Futia has led the effort to establish more representative government in North Castle for years.  He has been assisted by dozens of volunteers from among the hundreds of North Castle citizens who signed the Ward System petition.  These citizens:

  • Are publicly disclosed
  • Represent almost 10% of the active voters in North Castle
  • Feel strongly about the need for more representative government in North Castle.

That’s it. Town citizens. No one else.  No PAC’s.  No real estate interests.  No hidden agenda’s. No paid staff. No Brynwood. No self interests.

Nothing to gain but better government.

PLEASE JOIN US TO FIGHT FOR NEIGHBORHOOD REPRESENTATION – FORWARD THIS TO A FRIEND.

VOTE ON NOVEMBER 13 FOR BOTH OF THE WARD SYSTEM PROPOSALS.

,

The Westchester Board of Elections will Assure that All Wards will Have Equal Populations

Each Ward will have approximately 2,000 residents.

Mianus River Gorge To Buy 73-Acre North Castle Site For $2.8M | Armonk Real Estate

Mianus River Gorge will acquire a 73-acre parcel in North Castle for $2.8 million, according to Rod Christie, the preserve’s executive director. The purchase is expected to close in the coming months.

The property, which is located at 99 E. Middle Patent Road, is co-owned by Hope Levene and her relatives, according to Christie.

Levene, a 93-year-old Bedford resident who formerly lived in North Castle, has a long local history. In a July interview that focused on her decades of six decades of volunteerism at Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH), she discussed the various roles she had over her lifetime. They included serving as the only trustee of a small school district that included a 1-room schoolhouse, and later as a Bedford Central school board member. Levene has also been involved with Twigs, a thrift store that supports NWH.

Christie noted that Levene used to serve on his organization’s board. He appeared before the North Castle Town Board on Monday evening at a special meeting. The Town Board voted to authorize Supervisor Michael Schiliro to sign a conservation easement, which will cost $500,000

The easement, which will cover 68 of the site’s acres, will be paid for by using open-space funding. It was disclosed at the meeting that the funding stems from a 2004 voter referendum that authorized the town to bond up to $3 million for acquiring open space and for conservation easements.

The Town Board voted on Monday because town’s ability to utilize the bond expired after 10 years, according to Schiliro. Monday was the expiration date because it was the next business day,

Arthur Elrod Designed This $2.15M Palm Springs ‘Showpiece’ | Armonk Homes

41 images

Location: Palm Springs, California
Price: $2,150,000
The Skinny: Arthur Elrod, the interior wizard best known for the UFO-like residence he commissioned from John Lautner, designed the inside of this $2.15M Palm Springs home. Located in the “prestigious” neighborhood of Old Las Palmas, it’s got all kinds of “quintessential Palm Springs glamour” on display, in the words of the Sotheby’s listing, with swanky floor-to-ceiling double doors opening onto an “exceptional great room” with 14-foot ceilings, rear walls of glass, and a wet bar backed by a geometric mirrored wall. The walls and doors of the living room, lounge, and office are clad in handsome cyprus pecky wood. Off the upgraded kitchen, an informal dining area has French doors that open out onto a backyard hidden by tall hedges, with a pool and a built-in barbecue.
