5 Technologies to Keep an Eye On
Jan 13, 2012 by Ajeet Khurana
Very often being successful is a matter of being in the right place at the right time. That doesn’t mean it’s all about luck though – because if you’re smart and you keep an eye on the future you can maneuver yourself to make sure you are in the right place when the time comes.
Nowhere is this truer than on the web where rapidly moving technologies are quickly changing the way we consume news and media and even the way commerce is carried out. If you can see something big before it hits and prepare yourself for it, then you stand to rake in a lot of profit.
Here then are just five technologies that might make a big splash on the web and that you should keep your eye on. Some of them are already happening while others are a little way off or may never come into fruition. Either way, make sure you keep and eye on them and note what they are doing.
Tablets
Tablets are already among us and you’d have to be living under a rock not to have noticed the big splash that the iPad has made. At the same time though you should expect to see more and more of these over the coming months and a bigger range of sizes – the Galaxy Note for instance is unique for being half phone/half tablet at 5”. Make sure then that your site displays well in this format and that it’s ‘touch friendly’.
3D
Everything is becoming 3D at the moment from films to games – it’s only a matter of time before this goes online. Design your site though in a way that lends itself to 3D implementation (lots of boxes floating on a background) and think about how you could design it to look more 3D as it’s currently so in vogue.
4G
4G will replace 3G soon, and for mobile web browsing that means things are going to get stepped up a notch. So get ready to make the most of that and to provide more media rich mobile sites. And if you’re an app developer then start thinking of how to best use that faster connection speed.
The Cloud
The cloud is another new buzzword and everyone’s talking about ‘cloud computing’. This basically means keeping files and software off of your harddrive and on the net and running them from there. So again, think about how you can use this to provide more practical and intuitive services, and at the same time think about how it could help you to work faster and more efficiently.
Motion Sensor
The Kinect made headlines when it was released and has since gone quiet. However having recently gone open source there are now lots of people beavering away on it creating new games and applications. One guy has even managed to make a Minority Report-style web browser with holographic windows that he swipes around with gestures. Of course it’s a long time before you will need to implement designs for this kind of interface, but it is one to watch, and at the same time if you’re a programmer looking for a new market you should consider writing some basic Kinect games for the Xbox Live Marketplace. This is guest post from Jeet.
