A free rabies clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 14 in New Rochelle.

Vaccinations will be available by appointment for dogs, cats and ferrets owned by Westchester County residents at the Stamen Animal Hospital, 61 Quaker Ridge Rd.

Dogs must be on a leash, and cats and ferrets must be brought in carriers. Aggressive dogs must be muzzled.

Additional services—such as examinations and microchipping—and other vaccinations will be available at a reduced rate on Aug. 14 only.

State law mandates that dogs, cats and ferrets must receive their first rabies vaccine no later than four months after birth. A second rabies must be given within one year of the first shot, with addition boosters given every one or three years afterward, depending on the vaccine used.

There have been a few recent incidents of animals with rabies have happened in Westchester County.

First there was the cat in Yorktown Heights. Then there was the fox in Briarcliff Manor. And don’t forget about woodchuck in Katonah.

There was also a rabid kitten in Mount Pleasant, rabid skunks in Briarcliff Manor and Rockefeller State Park, rabid cats in Greenburgh and Yonkers and a rabid woodchuck in Ossining.
